If dinner is still two or three hours away and you are hungry, a snack fits. What actually keeps you full is something you can put in a bowl and eat again tomorrow: about 180 g of Greek yoghurt (cottage cheese is fine if it is already in the fridge), two eggs, a piece of fruit with a small handful of nuts, or leftover chicken from lunch. A packet of biscuits “just a piece” is usually finished while you are on your phone.
This page is about the gap between lunch and dinner. If the question is dessert several times a day, that is a different job: sugar without the spiral.
What lasts until dinner
Nothing special. Something you can pack on Thursday too.
- About 180 g of Greek yoghurt, plus an apple or a handful of berries, not the whole box.
- Two boiled eggs. If you want it to last longer, an egg and a piece of bread.
- Fruit and a small handful of nuts. Count the nuts into your palm and close the bag. An open bag empties itself.
- Cold chicken or other food from lunch, in a container. A bar in a bright wrapper is often closer to a sweet: a short while later you want another. Packing four of those lunches ahead of time is a simple weekly meal prep.
Put it in a bowl and put the packet away. Why protein helps you last until dinner (higher-protein meals raised fullness and satiety hormones in the trials reviewed in 2015; about 25–30 g at a meal was the range they discussed; greater satiety on a higher-protein diet was reported in 3 of 5 studies in a 2012 meta-analysis) is here, briefly: protein and fullness.
Rice cakes by the packet, sweet coffee instead of food, cereal by the handful, and biscuits “with tea” do not keep you full until dinner. Your hand is soon back in the drawer.
The other way happens too. Someone is proud of “not snacking at all,” then eats dinner fast and does not notice the second plate. A snack of Greek yoghurt or eggs, when dinner is still far off and hunger is already there, sometimes makes that dinner calmer.
If the packet is already open
A packet finishes faster when you are standing with a phone in your hand. Nobody sees the portion, including you.
Set aside what you meant to eat. Three biscuits on a plate, packet away. Sit down. Eat that first. Then decide whether you need more. Ten minutes is usually enough to tell hunger from an open packet.
Still hungry after the yoghurt or the eggs — add bread, another spoonful, or fruit. Lasting until dinner on one cucumber, “so you don’t spoil your appetite,” is not useful. Appetite at dinner does not get tidier from that.
If more went than you thought, keep dinner ordinary. Do not cancel it and do not push hunger to tomorrow “to make up for it.” Call it a large snack and sit down to eat as usual, or a little less if you are already full.
A snack by the clock, when you are not hungry, is extra too. Mild hunger and two or three hours until the meal — then yes.
Greek yoghurt or a couple of eggs in a bowl, eaten sitting down, is what actually keeps you full. A packet while you scroll usually does not.
At home and in the bag
At home it is easier when the Greek yoghurt is on a middle shelf and the biscuits are not in the drawer at hand height. Nuts in a small bag, not the big one “because it is cheaper”: the big one is often gone in a couple of evenings.
One container is enough for work: Greek yoghurt, two eggs, fruit, a handful of nuts. Then the vending machine is not the only option when a meeting ends and you want food at once. Travel is the same: a hungry trip ends with whatever is on the shelf, usually that same packet.
Any lidded box you own works. If you want glass that goes from the fridge to the microwave, the Rubbermaid Brilliance 3.2-cup glass containers (ASIN B08B7GLYZC) are a set of four that the listing describes as leak-proof. You do not need a menu for the month. Pack tomorrow’s container in the evening. If it does not suit you, next time put chicken in instead.
In short
You can eat between lunch and dinner if you are hungry and the meal is still far off. About 180 g of Greek yoghurt, two eggs, fruit with a handful of nuts, chicken from a container. A packet of biscuits fills a pause on the phone and often opens a second plate at dinner. You do not need to write the day off for that.
Nearby: protein, if the evening already feels empty, and sugar, if the snack is the drawer every day.

Common questions
Do you need to snack if you are losing weight?
Only if you are hungry and dinner is still two or three hours away. By the clock, “because you should,” you can skip it.
What can you eat to last until dinner?
About 180 g of Greek yoghurt, two eggs, fruit and a small handful of nuts, or cold chicken from lunch. In a bowl or a container, not from the packet while you are on your phone.
What if the whole packet went again?
Make dinner ordinary. Do not write the day off and do not skip dinner “to pay it back.” Next time, three biscuits on a plate and the packet away while you eat.
