“Nothing after six” is a myth. Weight follows the energy from food and drinks across days and weeks, not the number on the clock. If you are hungry in the evening, eat dinner at eight or at ten: sit down, a normal plate, stop when you are full.
Public guidance on weight loss talks about taking in less energy across the day, not a cutoff at 6pm. The NHS puts it directly: to lose weight you need to use more energy than you take in from food and drink (calories and weight). WHO frames a healthy diet as energy intake balanced with energy expenditure. CDC’s weight steps are about the overall pattern of eating, activity, sleep, and stress. How to look at the week, not one morning, is in the note on a calorie deficit.
Where “after six” came from
Six is an easy thing to say. Someone is still at work then. Someone’s shift ends late. For someone else the only quiet meal is after the children have eaten. The rule does not know that schedule.
If you finished eating by mid-afternoon and the evening is only tea, the scale sometimes dips. There was less food. That is the whole trick. The same thing happens when the day had a real plate and the evening is an ordinary dinner, not a raid on the fridge.
Why the morning number is higher
A late dinner is the same food as lunch. A large serving of rice or potatoes is a lot. Two spoons and a vegetable is not. There is no switch that stores everything as fat after 6pm.
The morning number is often higher for another reason. Dinner was salty, sleep was short, and the meal has not left yet. Fat does not arrive overnight like that. It is water and what is still in the gut. It is still unpleasant to see. Skipping breakfast “as a punishment” only makes the day sharper.
If the plate was very heavy and you lay down almost at once, heartburn and broken sleep are common. Appetite the next morning is fiercer because of that. The piece on sleep and weight is more useful then. The kitchen clock is not the cause.
If you are at the fridge again at night
A familiar pattern: a small yoghurt early in the evening “to make the cutoff,” and later bread, cheese, and biscuits eaten standing, because sitting down is “already late” and “this is not dinner.” The evening adds up to more than a normal plate would have, if you had just sat.
Night hunger is often built in the afternoon. Lunch was half a plate, the snack was skipped for the rule, and until evening there was only coffee. By night the rule is no help. You simply have not eaten for a long time.
If you are hungry, eat. Sit down. A plate, not a packet on the move: protein, vegetables, and a familiar side if you want one. Stop when you are full. An open packet is not a failure. It can be closed.
If you are not hungry and the hand is moving because of a series and a phone, start with tea and a few minutes away from the screen. Sometimes that is enough. Sometimes it is not — then heat a normal meal rather than stand at the fridge until midnight.
When a late dinner really gets in the way
What gets in the way is the repeat, not the hour. Delivery every evening, something sweet from the same box, and a sugary drink. Across a week that is no longer “one late dinner.” Or the day was empty and the night is “anything goes,” and sleep after that is broken.
A shift schedule does not fit the number six. If you eat after work at ten, then ten it is. A portion that lasts until the next meal, and a chair.
If your stomach hurts often, heartburn is strong, or sleep has come apart enough to get in the way of work, that is a clinician’s question. We do not diagnose. These pages are general: disclaimer.
What to try this week
For one week, eat dinner when you are actually home and hungry. A normal plate, not a “permitted” yoghurt for the clock. You can step on the scale in the morning, but do not judge one number. Are the late trips to the fridge fewer? Is it easier to sleep if you do not lie down straight after a full plate?
If the trips remain, the day was probably empty. Add a normal lunch. Do not make the evening even thinner: a yoghurt “for the rule” is often followed by biscuits.
Do not cancel breakfast because dinner was late. Porridge or a sandwich, as on an ordinary day.
In short
“Nothing after six” is easy to say. It does not explain weight. An ordinary dinner in the evening can be eaten sitting down. Hunger is better closed then, not with bread at the fridge late at night.

Common questions
Can you eat after 6pm and still lose weight?
Yes. Look at the plate and the glass across the day and the week, not at the clock. Dinner at eight or at ten fits a normal routine when the portion is ordinary.
Why is weight higher in the morning after a late dinner?
Often it is salt, food that has not left yet, and short sleep. Fat does not arrive overnight like that. Compare several mornings, not one day.
What if you are very hungry in the evening?
Remember lunch. If the afternoon was half a plate and a coffee, sit down and eat a normal meal. Holding out until morning more often ends with biscuits, standing, late at night.
